Near death

Had quite a close call yesterday, left the house (can’t remember why) but left my computer on. When I came back the computer had a completely blank screen. Not a big deal you may think, screensavers have been around for ages. Thing is my computer was not responding in the slightest. Turned it off and on again.
Bios basically said (in not such clear english) ‘You have no drives in this computer, no hard drive, no CD drive, nothing. Go away.’ Reboot, same thing. Bios fiddling, same thing.
This is a disaster, last time I backed up all my pictures (the only things of real importance on there) was about six or seven months ago.
There’s nothing I could do at home, just hope that its the IDE controller thats gone and the actual drives are fine. This would mean that the entire laptop was completely useless but at least I’d be able to retrieve my data.
So, I take it into work to try and find the problem. Turn it on…
‘Booting windows, no problems here.’

The relieve is indescribable. Back up of pictures will commence as soon as I have a free minute.

Whoops: May 18 was best day to change your life

Or in my case, whoops probably isn’t the word, considering that I actually wrote my letter of resignation on May 18th, that probably means that I’m doing ok!
It did make me curious, the fact that this life changing date was formulated by Dr Arnall, apparently a specialist in happines, motivation and confidence…
Thats quite an impressive specialisation!

Amusingly though, the snippets of the site presented to the searcher are as follows:

Random Task. Robs Randomness exposed … which, if previous experience is anything to go by, is a very bad sign.

Living it up

This evening I’m going to a party, that I was invited to yesterday evening. Nice.
It’s taking place in a pub… Not sure if it’s been hired, or what. It’s 1920’s & 30’s theme which sounds cool.
I was wondering about the hiring of the pub and how it would go, I know that in the students union (back in the day) you only had to get a certain level of takings and the hire was free.

For some reason I would imagine the conversation going something like this:

Punter(Henceforth refered to as ‘Punt’):How much is it to hire this bar out for an evening?
Bar Manager(Henceforth refered to as ‘BM’):Well if the takings behind the bar are X, it’ll be free, other wise it’ll be £250
Punt:How much is X?
BM:Well here is an equation, rearrange and solve for X
Punt:*GASP!* Applied mathematics, why do you haunt me so!

Moving on (up)

It has finally happened. I now have a new job!!!
I knew shaving for the interview would pay off!
So, it’s taken a lot longer that I thought it would! In the last three (ish) months my CV has been viewed 220 times on Jobsite.co.uk, out of that I’ve had five interviews spead over the last month.

I’d gotten so used to rejection that I almost felt like some kind of imposter when I got the contract through to sign. I’ve been assured that pre-job nerves are completely normal, and I’ve signed the contract so it’s all good!!

Handed in my notice on thursday so my last day will be the 17th of June. Coincidentally this is the day before I go on a weeks holiday to Budapest. Excellent timing methinks!!
Go for a holiday get job stress out and generally chill, come back and I’m in a new job!!!

Breakin’ Convention ’05

Well I went to the breakin’ convention yesterday. It’s on for three days you see, but we couldn’t really go for more than one.
Which is a good thing seeing as I spent about £30 on that one day and I’m feeling quite skint as it is (The university breakdance society paid for the entrance and the workshop too!).
So, I had a really good time. We started the day with a workshop. I chose to do a poppin’ workshop as opposed to the other option which was ‘rubic cube’ or general breakin’.
I’m glad I chose to do this as I’ve never done any poppin’ work and I’ve been to two general breakin’ workshops and I’m at the stage where I really need to practice practice practice before I even think about moving on.
The workshop was good fun and I’ve got a lot of stuff to try and practice (on top of what I’ve already got) which is good. After a break for some dodgy chicken burger lunch and a bit of a wander round Angel (the part of London that the convetion was in) the main show started.
This was several hours of dancing on a stage in the Sadler’s Wells theater. Some of it was a bit weird, but there was deffiantely a lot of very entertaining and inspiring dancing going on – not just breakin’ but all quite a few different styles.
Got back at about one o’clock in the morning which made it a very long day seeing as I left at ten in the morning.
Still I’m hoping that I’ll be able to go along next year with the society again. Many of the people I went with this time were talking about going for all three days… Personally I don’t know if I’d be up for that much but still… we’ll see 🙂

Upgrade, WordPress 1.5.1

Well the upgrade to wordpress 1.5.1 seems to have gone ridiculously smoothly. There was a sudden heart-stopping moment after I’d set the upload to overwrite everything, when I thought that my config file would now disappear.
Fortunately the wordpress developers are very clever. You see, instead of having a config file in the install package, they have an example config file that you have to rename as part of the installation process. Thus meaning that a direct overwrite of wordpress installs does not overwrite your configuration. Genius.

Also the new themes system means that I don’t have to worry about the style of the site changing either!!

Kingdom of Heaven

Well I’ve seen it now, and I thought it was damn good to be perfectly honest. Some people had voiced concern about ‘hollywoodisation’ of the historical aspects. Well I’m no expert on the crusades or anything but it all seemed pretty good to me!
Also, Ridley Scott as a director is no Steven Spielburg, if you know what I mean.
I don’t want to give anything away but it’s definately worth seeing. Possibly not quite as good as Gladiator but deffinately getting pretty damn close. Orlando Bloom is a pleasent supprise in the film. I’ve always had doubts about Orlando, having only seen him in Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean. I personally didn’t see a great deal of difference in the acting style between these two films, even thought the characters are quite different (Elf versus Human for starters).
Anyway this doubt has been firmly dispelled by Orlandos performance in Kingdom of Heaven and I look forwards to his next film. As long as it’s nothing like Calcium Kid, a film I refused to watch on principal (it looked crap).
