I am always impressed by the number of stars in the sky here, it really gives you an appreciation for what we miss in the UK due to light polution. What is quite suprising is how little light polution is needed to obscure over half of the stars you can see in the sky. It’s a real shame that I don’t have the equipment required to get a good photo (I have tried once).
Don’t need to worry about that for too much longer. Some councils are currently trialling turning the street lighting off overnight so as to save on electricity and lower their carbon emissions (read: save money to replace the stuff lost in Icelandic bank accounts).
It always surprises me how dark the sky can be when Im on holiday. Its a murky yellow mush here most of the time.
You should still be able get some cracking photo’s with a steady tripod, a relatively wide angle lens and a long exposure. Use the delay timer to take the photos to avoid camera shake. Try a few shots exposed between 15 seconds and a minute…
Damn I would like to try that, hopefully the next place I get to will be dark enough đŸ™‚
