Well it seems that my attempts to look at recent events with careful rational has failed. Those that wish to remain nameless have obviously not had their opinions swayed. Fair enough, I wasn’t really expecting them to read them anyway, that not why they were written.
So with a backlash looking like it could rise out of all proportions, I’ve taken the offending posts down.
However the nameless one’s should not celebrate an easy victory, at the moment this is a temporary measure. Once emotions have cooled (mine included) I’ll re-read the posts and consider if they deserve re-publishing or not.
Normal service will resume shortly
Rob,
I read your comments regarding ‘The victim’* this morning and wanted to let you know that I’m very pleased to see you have taken them off. I am also very surprised that you have not had a visit from the police yet. You may well have been joking, I don’t know you or anything about you, but making this issue into a joke is unacceptable, and the woman in question was probably terrified.
Good luck.
*Minor moderation to remove name reference
Of course people want to remain nameless…you threatended to force yourself upon someone. Emotions on this topic will never cool…I cannot believe you would think a joke of this nature is acceptable. You apologise for what you did (fair enough) and then contradict everything you said on here. Leave her out of your website and keep well away.
Nameless: That is exactly what I intend to do.
Sam: Thank you for your comment, I’ve been curious as to how this comes across to someone without a ’side’.
Let me try and clear up a few points:
I completely agree that the subject is not something to joke about, but it’s the only possible rational I can find for me saying anything like that. Extremely regretable.
Also yes, the moment I found out what I had said (remember that I was too drunk to remember anything) I saw that my actions were completely wrong. The only thing I can do now is stick by my word and leave her well alone.
I am terrified of a visit from the police. If ‘the nameless ones’ believe, as it seems that they do, that I am capable of such action then how can they not report me to the police the moment there is any kind of incident on campus. It’s something I’ve been worrying about a lot recently.
Personally I don’t believe Rob brought this topic over as a joke at any point in his open discussion and in fact has taken the matter very seriously. I have known Rob for about 11 years now and the only conclusion I would have come to is he made some very poorly placed comment in a moment of male drunkenness as a joke. In the light of day we can all see this is not a matter anyone should ever joke about but also I think most can relate to saying/doing some pretty stupid things when wasted. None of the comments made here are going to change the views of Rob that any of his friends have, the whole idea of it when compared to Rob is quite farcical if you really know him. This unfortunately is one great big misunderstanding stemming from lack of communication, hearsay and the possibility of completely inappropriate comments. I personally see both sides of the picture and feel that each have reacted in understandable ways, time to close the book people and move on. I’m sure everyone, especially Rob, will have learned something.
An excellent comment and one I wholeheartedly agree with.
I have read all these bleating comments about how Rob ‘should’t make a joke’ of the situation. I can tell you, if the nameless one even considers contacting the police
however, then that is what this situation will become…a cruel sick joke. What are they going to say? “Excuse me, this man threatened to rape me!” Well as far I am
aware, the only offensive comment was made drunk from one man to another, and then it was passed to the ‘victim.’ There is no question that the comment said was
unacceptable, and Rob will pay for that by having a guilty conscience for the rest of his life, but don’t anyone dare compare this situation to some of the shocking
ordeals that women have been through. Stalked, threatened, phyiscally abused, mentally tormented. And some people think that is in the same league of what had
happened? I find it disgusting that some people would even think to compare.
The whole event has become ridiculously out of hand. For the people who do not know the situation and have only heard it from ‘word of mouth’, stop leaving comments.
And, if the situation is really as shocking to the ‘victim’ as people would want me to believe, then why don’t you do her the decency of not continuing these posts any
further. If this experience has been as traumatic for her as it has been made out then you people could at least stop reminding her of the ‘shocking ordeal!!!’ that
she had to suffer. Just know this though, to anyone who considers police action, by bringing this forward as any type of rape case, you may as well just be laughing
directly into the faces of the real victims who have lost so much.
